Quantum Theory of the Harmonic Oscillator and Electromagnetic Field o Project Summary Many experimental observations in physics such as the absorption and emission of radiation atoms cannot be described by a classical theory of electromagnetic fields (classical electrodynamics). This theoretical project is focused on the study of the quantum electromagnetic field. The concept of a photon is naturally derived, and it is found that electromagnetic fields are not continuous but instead are made up of these particles. Using these results, the interactions of the quantum field with a simple atomic system (known as Jaynes-Cumming model) are studied and, in particular, the differences between the field in its most quantum and least quantum states are investigated. The quantum electromagnetic field is formulated as a collection of quantum harmonic oscillators, hence its inclusion in the title of the project. Applications of this project lie in the field of quantum optics, quantum information, and nanophotonics.
